Keemun (Qimen) Tea
Keemun teas are a sweet black tea indigenous to Anhwei, China. Classic Keemuns offer a sweet infusion with notes apple and plum that is at the same time smoky and well bodied. Keemun is complex enough to be a self drinker, however it is often added to blends, particularly breakfast tea.
The finest grade of Keemun is called Hao Ya. Hao Ya supply is very limited as it is only produced in years when conditions are just right. Another highly sought after grade of Keemun is Mao Feng.
Unlike most other varieties of tea that have a limited shelf life of 18-24 months, Keemun can improve and gain character with age much like a fine wine if it is properly stored in an air tight opaque container. Also unlike other teas, Keemun comes from a unique subvariety of Camellia sinesis; the only variety that contains myrcenal, an essential oil that gives the tea its distinct sweetness.
